Looking back at ten years of ICT women success
|
As we celebrate women’s
month, we take a walk back and look at women who have
made the African Information and Communication
Technology (ICT) industry the success it is today.
“For a long time ICT was viewed as a male dominated
industry with very few women involved in it,” says Jane
Mosebi, ForgeAhead managing director.
“However in the last ten years we have seen a whole
paradigm shift and watched women rise to take up their
rightful places in many sectors including ICT.
“In today’s world of technology women are in control and
actively contributing to making it progressive every
day,” she says.
The African ICT Achievers Awards Programme was launched
in 1998, at a time when there were not as many women
participants in the sector. This programme was launched
to initially encourage black participants and recognize
those who had done outstanding work in the sector. Today
the programme has spread to the rest of Africa.
As the years advanced and with the advancement of the
programme, the Top Woman ICT Achiever Award has become
sought after. This of course bodes well because it
simply means that women have seized the sector and are
taking advantage of opportunities that have been opened
for them. More and more ICT companies are run by women
or have women in very senior positions.
Let’s take a look at some phenomenal women that have
positively contributed to ICT advancement in Africa and
