The
7th SADC ICT in Government Summit and Networking Forum
29-31 May 2008, Balaclava
Mauritius
The Southern African ICT in
Government Summit
Over the past few years, many African
countries have leveraged the opportunities
provided by ICTs and have put in place NICI
(National Information and Communication
Technologies) Plans to support their
socio-economic development efforts. With this in
mind, an action plan called the African Regional
Action Plan on the
Knowledge Economy( ARAPKE) was born. This action
plan adopted by African leaders through several
fora, including the African Union Summit, aims
at building a
region full benefiting from ICT services by the
year 2015.
The Action Plan is expected to contribute toward
the achievement of the Millenium Development
Goals as well.
The Action Plan must include all stakeholders
including governments and private sector
organisations. Governments who have accepted and
championed
the use of ICTs in their countries through
National ICT strategies and the deployment and
use of technology at all levels of government in
order to improve service
delivery to the citizens of their countries, are
naturally also those countries where the
adoption of technology at all levels of society
has been more prolific.
This year’s Summit, the 7th Annual Southern
African ICT in Government Summit will comprise a
dynamic two and a half day high level Public and
Private Sector
ICT outcomes based forum that looks at how ICTs
can help achieve the United Nations Millennium
Development goals. The programme will present
discussion
opportunities around the challenges and
opportunities facing governments through to 2015
and beyond as well as to look at the deployment
of eGovernment
to enhance service delivery in Southern Africa,
broadly in keeping with the objectives of ARAPKE.
Across Southern Africa, as in the rest of
Africa, ICTs is seen as a critical component to
interaction and services to citizens,
accelerating service delivery and easing
communications challenges, but governments
consistently need to deal with ICT legacy
situations while migrating to new systems.
Various key topics which will
come under the spotlight at this landmark summit
will include:
• Good governance - A cornerstone of sustainable
service delivery
• ICTs - Helping to achieve the UN Millennium
Development goals
• Leadership for growth - The changing role of
the CIO
• A critical evaluation of the status of
eGovernment in Southern Africa
• Partnerships for ICT development and digital
inclusion
• Harmonisation of ICT Policy and Regulatory
environments in Southern Africa for effective
government collaboration.
Delegate Demographics
ForgeAhead’s annual
ICT in Government programme has allowed it to
develop many relationships and a strong brand
perception amongst all stakeholders and has
placed ForgeAhead in the enviable position that
the methodology it employs to secure the
appropriate quality of government decision
makers allows ForgeAhead to
guarantee, with relative certainty, the audience
that Private Sector partners will interact with
during the period of the summit. This is because
our Government
decision makers are hosted at the Summit as
ForgeAhead’s guests and need only carry the cost
of travel and incidentals. The relationship that
ForgeAhead has built
up with the South African GITO Council and
ForgeAhead’s reputation for providing a strong
business to business audience coupled with
strategic content, ensures
that the stakeholders to the Southern African
ICT in Government is of the highest quality.
