Project Description: SADC e-Readiness Review and Strategy

Research conducted on all SADC States to establish the status of e-readiness. In areas such as e-governances, e-services, e-business, ICT awareness, infrastructure and policy and regulatory framework research was conducted to define a level of competence, which ultimately gave birth to the three stages of e-readiness in Africa.

Create a National ICT Strategy for South Africa. The key issues that would help South Africa become more proactive in its efforts to embrace the Information Age and to become a leading role player in global ICT were addressed. The essential elements of the framework were based contextually to the current situation in South Africa at the time, and took in to account the economy and realistic approaches to ascertain a feasible framework.

Information Management
One of the key objectives of this study was to accurately size and segment the market. This research was done according to the following:
• In-depth analysis of current government expenditure on IT products and services, segmented by functional department,
• Detailed breakdown of budgets;
• Insight into the degree of black business participation in each of these sectors,;
• Analysis of the large projects, both historical and those still in the pipeline at the time of the project;
• A view of how the then imminent changes in procurement policies would affect the structure of budgets in future by national/regional perspective and by procurement authority.

Project Description: Disability Study

Numerous social backlogs affect the ability of the disabled to make use of the majority of services available. The challenge that the government faces with regard to disability is to make available to the disabled at a comparable level, the same services and facilities that are taken for granted by people without disabilities. The Department of Communication recognized this challenge and the need to make available to the disabled their constitutional right to access and information that is provided through broadcasting, telecommunications, and postal and computing services. The Department of Communications also recognised that there are gaps in the links between national policy level, regulatory level and the service provision level. This study aimed at qualifying, quantifying and documenting this issue to obtain a clearer understanding of where these gaps are and recommendations on how to close them.

The project was aimed to see how jobs can be created within the ICT sector in South Africa and to understand the current situation of jobs within the industry. The aims of the research project were to:
• Understand the current status of research and information relating to the development of the ICT sector.
• Identify current initiatives, strategies and models that is currently used for job creation within the ICT sector
• Analyse International and South African examples of job creation strategies within the ICT sector.
• Suggest possible strategies and models that could enable job creation within the South African ICT sector.

The project was aimed to understand and analyse successful methods of incubation as well as the agencies and mechanisms that can aid in creating sustainable development and growth.
The aims of the research project were to:
• Understand the current status of research and information relating to the development of the ICT sector.
• Identify current initiatives, strategies and models that is currently used to develop the ICT sector
• Analyse International and South African examples of mechanisms, agencies and institutes that develop the ICT sector.
• Suggest possible strategies and models that could develop the South African ICT sector.
• Identify funding and governance models for the suggested models.

Project Description: E-Government Research PNC on ISAD

ForgeAhead has conducted research on the status of the implementation of phase one of the e-Government programme of government across the three spheres of government. It involved the assessment of government’s readiness for phase two implementation. This will be achieved using multiple inputs, including consultative work sessions, interviews and questionnaires.

ForgeAhead has embarked on an exploratory research programme focusing on the status of ICT usage within the SADC Government space and East Africa. Through the process of exploratory research data collection was conducted through secondary research such as reviewing available literature and/or data, case studies and pilot studies and qualitative approaches such as informal discussions with government officials, employees, and management through more formal approaches using in-depth interviews and surveys.

Project Description: Individual Profiling
Entity Corporate Intentions
ForgeAhead conducted in-depth face-to-face structured interviews on behalf of Corporate Intentions with the purpose of establishing individual profiles. Six interviews took place between October 1, 2008 and November 20, 2008 while a further four interviews were completed before January 30, 2009. Ten respondents have been identified by Corporate Intentions. All the interviews were conducted in English and were recorded by ForgeAhead researchers.

ForgeAhead has been appointed by Microsoft Donors and Bilateral Organization Relation in Africa to conduct a study of how many PC’s have been supplied as part of the Chinese Companies in Sub Saharan Africa, specifically companies that are also funding computer donations using Chinese government funds.

ForgeAhead was appointed independent transaction advisor to assess the alignment of SALGA proposed ICT Strategy and its Corporate Strategy. The Strategy was reviewed and refined for approval by the executive members committee.
 
ForgeAhead places a strong  focus on Corporate Social Investment activity
which is evident in the activities around the African ICT Achievers Awards.

ForgeAhead works together
with partners, who sponsor technology and training prizes for certain category winners in the awards to activate these benefits.
