2010 World Cup: Is SA technology ready? Mogaki Itumeleng – Researcher, ForgeAhead

Although the Minister of Communications, Ivy Matsepe-Cassaburi has expressed her confidence that SA is technologically ready to host the 2010 Soccer World Cup, experts have raised serious concerns around infrastructure development and technology. The 2010 Local Organising Committee has made little reference to the technology readiness of the country to host the world cup event.  Rather the focus has been on other issues such as the monies to be spent on building and upgrading of stadiums.  Ms Tumi Makgabo, the LOC spokesperson, told ForgeAhead that the LOC does not directly deal with technology related issues. “There is however a working committee comprising of government and private sector officials who address these issues, she says.”

Speaking at ForgeAhead’s ICT in Local Government Summit in Mmabatho recently, Padiso Makola, Director ICT 2010 FIFA World Cup, said sufficient bandwidth will be available to cope with peak levels of video, data, and voice (Triple Play). Other than the delay in the building and upgrading of world class stadiums, the issues of broadband still rears its head as a challenge.  Issues around the global media accessing speedy information, information security at all levels, local telecoms prices, as well as wireless technology will play a big part in the South Africa’s e-Readiness.
