Western Cape Province formally launch LOGICT forum

During October 2006, ForgeAhead assisted in organising a pre-conference for the Western Cape Provincial Government, prior to the first formal launch of a Local Government ICT Forum (LOGICT). These forums are aimed to launch in all the South African provinces as a matter of urgency to stimulate the use of ICTs in effective service delivery.

At the conference, ForgeAhead’s Head of Consulting, Adrian Schofield, presented the company’s research report and findings on ICT use in Local Government, completed earlier in the year. Schofield told the delegates from the private and public sector about the various initiatives running in the various provinces as well as the myriad of concerns and hurdles still faced by local governments, municipalities and district municipalities today.

Like the conference, the establishment of a LOGICT forum in each province is a great platform to share information, knowledge and resources, so as to eliminate duplication of efforts. This is the view of Douglas Gelderbloem, Infrastructure Manager at City of Cape Town Metro .

Says Schofield, “This conference brought together the LOGICT members – senior IT people in government – as well as other stakeholders from the private and public sector to share knowledge and agree on the way forward for the forum and the province as a whole to effectively implement ICTs.”

At the formal launch of the LOGICT, the constitution was signed into being and the executive committee was introduced to all the stakeholders. The pre-conference, through the various workshops and session resulting in discussions on the progress of ICT implementations and projects, such as the Smart Cape Project, was a perfect preamble to the launch of such an important forum.

In conclusion Schofield says that the LOGICT will facilitate an appreciation of technology that will contribute to local governments. “Many managers don’t see that the investment in technology will have clear benefits for the future.” The LOGICT will however aim to address that issue.
